What it's like
Niguarda lies beyond viale Fulvio Testi, at the northern edge of the city, and was an independent town until 1918. The old village, around the church of San Bernardo and via Ornato, still feels like a village, with courtyards and trattorias.
The quarter is dominated by two presences: the Ospedale Niguarda, one of the largest hospitals in Italy, and Parco Nord Milano, a large metropolitan park created on the grounds of the former Bresso airfield and grown over the years into one of the city's green lungs.
Between the village and the infrastructure stretch the Ca' Granda public-housing districts, built in the 1950s as a garden city to a design by Piero Bottoni, and the more anonymous ones along viale Fulvio Testi. The lilac M5, which arrived in 2014, brought Niguarda closer to the centre again.

Where to eat and drink
In the old village on via Ornato a few neighbourhood trattorias and historic social clubs remain; the rest are bars, pizzerias and the places around the hospital.
The quarter has three street markets: via San Miniato on Tuesday, via Val di Ledro on Wednesday and via Val Maira on Thursday.
Getting there
The lilac M5 serves Niguarda with the Ca' Granda and Bignami stops, the terminus near Parco Nord. The yellow M3 reaches Comasina and Affori just to the west.
On the surface there are trams 4, 5 and 7. Parco Nord is reachable on foot from Bignami or by bike along the Seveso.
