Milan with a dog
Milan is an easy city to get around with a dog: plenty of fenced areas, big parks, and places that almost always let you in. The transport rules are the part to know.
Dog areas, neighbourhood by neighbourhood
The city runs nearly 300 public dog areas, fenced and unfenced spaces to let a dog off the lead.
This site maps them one by one: start from the dog areas page and narrow to your district, for example District 3 towards Città Studi or District 6 towards the Navigli.
The open data does not say which are fenced or have a water point: it is worth checking on the ground before unclipping the lead.
The parks to run in
The large parks almost all have one or more dog areas: Parco Sempione, the Giardini Montanelli, Parco Nord, the Parco Forlanini, the Parco delle Cave.
The parks page notes for each whether there is a dog area. Outside the fenced areas a dog must be kept on the lead, with a muzzle carried.
Dogs and the market
At the street market dogs on the lead are generally welcome in the open-air spaces; at the food stalls, by common sense, you keep your distance. Early morning, with fewer people, is the best time.
On public transport
On ATM transport (metro, tram, bus) small dogs travel free in a carrier; larger dogs on a short lead and with a muzzle carried, one per passenger, free. At peak times it can be crowded: consider quieter hours.
How dog-friendly it is
- Bars and cafés: the great majority let dogs in without a problem, often with a water bowl.
- Restaurants: many accept well-behaved dogs; it is worth asking when you book.
- Shops: it varies; food shops and pharmacies usually not.
- Museums and indoor sites: almost always not, except guide dogs.

Milan has several 24-hour veterinary clinics; the public ATS veterinary surgery offers some services at a reduced rate. Keep the number of a clinic near where you are staying to hand.
