Milan in August
Between mid and late August Milan empties out: locals are at the sea or in the mountains. The city does not shut down, but it changes pace.
The city empties out
The emptiness is felt most in the week of Ferragosto (15 August) and the one after. Residential areas go quiet, traffic disappears, parking is easy. The tourist centre, on the other hand, stays alive.
Street markets in August
Most street markets keep running all through August, with fewer stalls and fewer people. A few small markets skip one or two dates around the 15th.
The farmers markets and some fixed-date markets, like East Market, pause and resume in September.

- Civic museums and major exhibitions: Museo del Novecento, Castello Sforzesco, Pinacoteca di Brera, Museo della Scienza.

- Supermarkets in the centre and the chains; many pharmacies on a rota.
- The covered municipal markets, on reduced hours with stalls closing in rotation.
What closes
Many neighbourhood shops close for the holidays (bakeries, delis, hardware stores), along with much of the restaurant scene outside the centre and a good number of bars.
Closures cluster between 10 and 25 August; there is often a sign on the shutter with the reopening date.
Some ATM transit lines also switch to reduced or summer timetables: check the app before relying on a neighbourhood bus.
Ferragosto
15 August is a national holiday: almost everything is closed except the tourist centre, the main museums and transport (on a holiday timetable). It is the quietest day of the year to visit the Duomo or walk through an almost deserted Milan.
The upside: prices and calm
Hotels cost far less than the rest of the year, there are no queues, and the evenings are breathable.
