What it's like
Lambrate lies to the east, beyond Città Studi, around the square and the church of San Martino.
It was an independent town until 1923, with its factories on the river Lambro, the Innocenti works that made the Lambretta scooter here, and a fabric of low houses and courtyards.
After the factories closed, the sheds on via Ventura and via Massimiano were taken over by galleries, design studios and workshops. During the April Design Week the quarter becomes one of the Fuorisalone districts, under the name Lambrate Design District.
Next to it is Ortica, an even more village-like pocket, known for its large murals on the history of Milan and for the song about it. Lambrate station is one of the city's main railway hubs.

Where to eat and drink
The name that put Lambrate on the map is the Birrificio Lambrate, opened in 1996 on via Adelchi, Milan's first craft brewery, with the tavern opposite always full.
Around it are neighbourhood trattorias, pizzerias and the bars around piazza Rimembranze. The via Rombon market, on Thursdays, handles the area's shopping.
Getting there
Lambrate has the Lambrate FS stop on the M2 and, above it, the large Milano Lambrate railway station, with regional, intercity and some long-distance trains.
On the surface there are trams 5 and 33. The quarter is cut in two by the railway, with the old centre on the square side.
