What it's like
Città Studi occupies the belt east of the centre, between corso Buenos Aires and Lambrate.
The name is literal: in the 1920s the city moved the Politecnico and the Statale's science faculties here, and a grid of middle-class apartment blocks grew up around the university buildings.
Today the population is largely student, with rents lower than in the centre and a constant flow between piazza Leonardo da Vinci, the lecture halls and the libraries.
The rest are families and older people who have lived here for decades, in an orderly quarter with no particular tourist draw.
It is an area that works well to live in: greenery throughout, services, a street market, and Lambrate station close by for getting out of the city.

Where to eat and drink
Città Studi's cooking is that of a university quarter: pizza al taglio, kebabs, fixed-price trattorias and a few historic names like Bar Quadronno.
Just outside, towards Ortica, is the Birrificio Lambrate, Milan's first craft brewery.
The via Valvassori Peroni market runs on Saturday mornings, well stocked with fruit, vegetables and deli.
Getting there
The M2 cuts through the quarter with the Piola and Lambrate stops; regional trains also leave from Lambrate.
On the surface there are many trams (5, 19, 23, 33) and the 90/91 trolleybus that loops around the city. The quarter is flat and spread out, easy by bike.
