What it's like
Porta Nuova occupies the belt between Porta Garibaldi station, the Bastioni and the Isola quarter. Until the 2000s it was a marginal area, with the disused rail yard, a flyover and the hole left by an old property scheme never completed.
The new district grew around piazza Gae Aulenti, a raised circular square with a fountain and the UniCredit Tower, Italy's tallest building with its spire.
Beside it are the Bosco Verticale, the two tree-covered residential towers that became a symbol of Milan, and the Biblioteca degli Alberi, a free, always-open public park.
It is an area of offices, hotels and shops more than of neighbourhood life, busy at lunchtime and at weekends, with a dining scene that keeps growing.

Where to eat and drink
Around piazza Gae Aulenti and Corso Como there are quality chains, restaurants and cocktail bars; Princi has a bakery much used for the lunch break.
Not far off, in piazza XXV Aprile, is the large Eataly in the former Teatro Smeraldo. For a real street market you have to move to Isola, with the via Garigliano market on Tuesday and Saturday.
Getting there
Porta Nuova is one of the best-served hubs in Milan: Porta Garibaldi station with regional, national and airport trains, and three metro stations (Garibaldi on M2 and M5, Gioia on M2, Zara on M3 and M5). The whole district is pedestrian and raised over several levels.

Where is the Bosco Verticale in Milan?
The Bosco Verticale is in the Porta Nuova district, between piazza Gae Aulenti and the Biblioteca degli Alberi park, on the Isola side. They are two private residential towers: you can see them up close from the park, but the interiors are not open to visitors.
Is there a market in Porta Nuova?
The skyscraper district has no open-air street market. The nearest is the via Garigliano market in Isola, Tuesday and Saturday mornings, a few minutes' walk from the Bosco Verticale.
