Milan's big central park, laid out by Emilio Alemagna in 1888 on the former parade ground behind the Castello Sforzesco. Nearly 39 hectares of English-style landscape: rolling lawns, a small lake, tree-lined avenues linking the castle to the Arco della Pace. On a sunny day it becomes the city's open-air living room.
Half of cultural Milan sits inside it: the Triennale design museum, the Liberty-style Civic Aquarium, the Napoleonic-era Arena, and Gio Ponti's Torre Branca with its rooftop panorama. It is always busy but large enough to find a quiet corner, and it is still the most natural meeting point in the centre.
