The first urban reforestation project in Italy: since 1974 the Italia Nostra association and the volunteers of the Urban Forestry Centre have grown a genuine wood on former farmland west of the city. Today it is 120 hectares of mature trees, clearings, a lake, canals and allotments tended by residents.
It does not have the tidy look of a city park: you walk on dirt paths among oaks and hornbeams, and the Cascina San Romano at its centre runs environmental programmes. It is the right place for a long walk or a picnic when you want to forget you are in Milan.
