What it's like
Barona lies to the south-west, between the Naviglio Pavese, via Barona and the boundary with Assago and Rozzano.
For a long time it was an area of farmhouses, brick kilns and small industry along the canal, and after 1945 it filled with public-housing districts, including the large via Modica complex.
The quarter has no monuments and no nightlife: it is a place to live, with a social fabric marked by poverty and immigration but also by a network of rooted cooperatives and associations, such as the Fondazione Cariplo which has invested here in social housing and services.
What makes Barona special is the Parco delle Risaie: hundreds of hectares of fields still farmed with rice, with the Battivacco and Nosedo farmhouses, inside the Parco Agricolo Sud, right up against the last apartment blocks.

Where to eat and drink
Barona has a basic neighbourhood food offer: bars, pizzerias, minimarkets. The farmhouses of the Parco delle Risaie run direct sales of rice and farm produce and seasonal fairs. The via Di Rudinì market runs on Thursday mornings.
Getting there
Barona has no metro: the main link is tram 3, which runs down from the Duomo along the Naviglio Pavese, and tram 15 towards Rozzano.
Several buses connect the quarter to Famagosta (M2) and Romolo (M2), the nearest stops. An extension of the M4 to the south-west is under study.
