The neighbourhood

The Giambellino is one of Milan's emblematic working-class quarters, along via Giambellino and via Lorenteggio, in the west. Tenement blocks, courtyards, a strong working-class identity: it is the quarter Giorgio Gaber sang about in the 'Ballata del Cerutti'.

The area has two markets: Vespri Siciliani on Wednesday and Gelsomini on Thursday. They are busy neighbourhood markets, with cheap food and plenty of clothing and household stalls.
