Milan's historic markets
19 of the neighborhood markets listed on this site are officially recognized by Regione Lombardia as "mercati a valenza storica" (markets of historic value): the oldest, at the Bastioni di Porta Nuova, has been running since 1926.
What "historic value" means
The recognition is governed by Regional Council Resolution (Delibera di Giunta regionale) no. 8996 of 20 February 2009: to qualify, a market must show it has run continuously for at least 50 years, keeping the same mix of goods that ties it to the neighborhood's economic and cultural tradition. Nominations come from trade associations, consumer groups, chambers of commerce or local authorities; Regione Lombardia grants the final recognition and adds the market to a regional registry, updated periodically.
